The chaotic aftermath of an alien attack has left most of the world completely incapacitated. In the six months since the initial invasion, the few survivors have banded together outside major cities to begin the difficult task of fighting back. Each day is
a test of survival as citizen soldiers work to protect the people in their care while also engaging in an insurgency campaign against the occupying alien force. The series tells the story of the aftermath of a global invasion by several races of extraterrestrials
that neutralizes the world's power grid and technology, quickly destroys the combined militaries of all the world's countries, and apparently kills over 90% of the human population within a few days. Let me start by saying that yes I am a "Hardcore" Sci-Fi
fan, but don't let that take away from the fact that this is a pretty good show.
The acting is not as bad as some would say and nor the CGI or effects. As with most shows the first few episodes get a bit of a bad "wrap" if you will but the story looks pretty good. Like the age old Starwars vs. Star Trek debate one group will like it and the other won't. Personally the story line is pretty good and just like "The Walking Dead" making a pretty good "Zombie Aftermath" T.V show this seems to be a good "Alien Aftermath" equivalent.
Yes like most T.V shows the plot becomes fairly apparent after about 1 episode (unlike shows like "LOST" which never became apparent, I still think that the dog dreamed it all) but once again don't let that take away from the actual "good" storyline. T.V is supposed to take you away to the world of imagination and this does it well.
It may not be as original as "Flash Gordon" was in it's day, but look at "Sliders". In essence - boy meets wormhole, wormhole takes boy to other place, "good" times to follow... yet you would be hard pressed to say that at the end of the day these two were the same. They both came into their own light. Early on "Falling Skies" seems to be doing just that. They're taking everything and making it their own. Takes the well-known "wicked/evil outer-space alien". Skulp and mix it with an original and unique storyline. Hire a decent cast of actors. Top-off by including some decently GOOD special effects (for a TV show at least). That's the process the producers used to create the original series "Falling Skies".
I had VERY low expectations after deciding to watch the first few episodes of Season 1 of Fallen Skies, and for good reasons too:
I think most would agree with me that vast majority Alien/Sci-Fi TV shows produced after 1990, the intelligence level of dialogue is at the kindergarten level, and the actors are so horrendous that Pee-Wee Herman deserves an Oscar and Fran Drescher sounds angelic by comparison, and finally the storyline/content is an obvious low-rent knock-off of an existing TV show that's no longer being produced (which is probably Star Trek).
That being said, after 3 episodes of season 1, I was absolutely shocked by how much I enjoyed watching Falling Skies.
Despite the content behind the storyline having overly-used element of "other-worldly high-tech creepy-looking aliens that invade earth", Fallies Skies follows a unique and original storyline that leaves the viewer wanting to know more on what happens next after each episode watched. It also surprised the hell out of me that the cast of Falling Skies has actors that can ACTUALLY ACT, and on top of that they act *well*. My favorite cast member and corresponding character is a tie between: -Will Patton as Captain Weaver: the military leader of a combined group of soldiers and civilians learning how to combat the aliens, and -Colin Cunningham as John Pope: the stereotypical bad-ass with no morals that leads a small group of marauders called the "Berserkers" who believe there's only 1 thing in the world left that can make you happy: Killing "Skitters" (used as pet-name for the aliens).
So, if you're currently asking yourself: "Is it really worth it to give Falling Skies a chance by watching an episode or two?" -Yes it is, but be sure to watch the episodes in order.
Falling Skies is NOT like Star Trek: Every episode is NOT a landing party of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, plus one randomly named "red-shirt" that goes down to a new planet, encounters a weird new alien or sentient being, red shirt dies somehow, Spock figures out the problem, McCoy makes a wise-crack at Spock's expense and says "Damn it, Jim!" at least once per episode, and Kirk is the hero who protects the ship, or kills the bad-alien, and one time I think he yelled "Kahn!!!!" really loud or something. (yeah... I killed that joke, revived it with crash-cart paddles, and then killed it again, so what? You can't honestly say Star Trek doesn't deserves it, can you?) Tom looks thru a blasthole inna mech. Some liquid bio-ooze is leaking out. Suggesting that an organism, now dead, is inside the shell of the mech. Controlling it. Piloting it.
